Search intent is the reason why a user types a particular query into a search engine like Google or Yahoo. It is also known as User Intent. Common types of Search Intent include informational, commercial, navigational and transactional.

Why is SI important for SEO?

The goal of search engines is to provide relevant results for visitors for users. Therefore, you need to understand it if you want a good rank in search results. In the same way, if you want to succeed with SEO and content marketing today, Search Intent needs to be a big part of your approach.

According to Semrush, with a good understanding of search intent, you can:

  • Develop a more effective strategy by targeting keywords that align with the needs of your target audience.
  • Create relevant content, Since search intent helps you be able to understand your user’s needs, you will be ready to create content that fulfills them.

What are the types of Search Intent and how to use keywords?

There are four types:

Navigational intent

When users want to find a specific page. It is distinctive from the other searches in which users do not exactly know what they are trying to find. For example: “pinterest login”

Here, the keywords to use are often branded such as:

  • Gmail login
  • Apple store refund policy
  • Disney World rules

Commercial intent

In this type of search, users want to do research in order to make a purchase decision. Simply put, they are looking for information, but the information is closely connected to the action: buy it or not. As an example we have “best vacuum cleaner” or “nyx review”.

Some keywords you can use to make the most of this type of search intent are:

  • Starplus vs Netflix
  • Instax mini evo review
  • Best sun cream

It is important to note that in this scenario, most of the results shown will be from third-party pages with independent reviews of the products.

Informational intent

It is when users want to learn more about something. They are usually presented with words like who, what, where, why, and how. For example: “what is qa”

Some keywords you can use are:

  • What is SEO
  • When to travel to peru
  • What is outsourcing

Transactional intent

Here, users want to complete a specific action, such as a purchase, an email subscription, etc. They are money makers, so using strategic keywords will help you a lor. E.g. buy Kellen book.
